Utah is now officially my favourite state. They have a phenomenal system for making geological data available to the public, much of it in GIS formats. They also have very progressive counties which have online systems for determining land ownership. Turns out the Promontory Mountains are owned by several corporations, one of which is Young Partnership Limited.
The Young family are descendents of Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints who took over the presidency in 1847 shortly after the death of Joseph Smith. Brigham Young was instrumental in moving the church to Utah, where he became governor, and founded Salt Lake City along with several other cities and institutions which bear his name. As a renowned polygamist, Young had 55 wives with which he had 56 children. As such, the Young name is common in Utah and it shouldn't come as a surprise to me that they own much of Utah. Hopefully they are responsive to a geologist's request to sample a few rocks on their land!
